Mindfulness Meditation

What is Mindfulness

Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing if were different. Enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will). Being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won't). We observe life as it is happening and accept the current situation without judgement or struggle. We are allowing our feelings to exist without letting them drive our actions. We notice our thoughts as they arise without the need to react to them and take action based on what you feel in your heart rather than old habit or short term convenience.

What is Meditation

The mental concentration on something, others consider that we mediate when we imagine something that gives us peace or satisfaction. It's one goal is to slow down and eventually stop the scattered activity of our minds. There are numerous types of mediations available, however my favorite ones for beginners are guided meditations and breathing meditation.

How to Meditate

For the formal practice time, sit on a cushion on the floor, or on a chair, with a straight unsupported back. Pay attention to the movement of your breath meaning when you breathe in be aware and notice how you are breathing in. When you breathe out, be aware you are breathing out. Thoughts will arise along with other distractions of sounds and sensations however bring your attention back to your breath. Repeat this process for however long you wish. There are several mobile applications that are great for all levels of meditations. One of my favorite apps is called Insight Timer.
